Qualified lead

A lead someone has decided is worth sales time. The word means nothing until the definition is written down and shared.

Qualified lead, often split into marketing qualified and sales qualified, labels a prospect that meets an agreed bar: the right company, the right role, and some evidence of a reason to talk.

The term causes more disputes than any other in this list, because marketing and sales rarely hold the same definition and an agency and a client almost never do. Write the bar down before the first campaign, with examples of what fails it, and the argument disappears.
